When it comes to make-up I’ve always been a more is more kind of girl, in fact, my mantra was always “the more the merrier!” I’m talking full coverage foundation, contour and highlighter, baking, eyeshadow, winged liner, coats of mascara and layers of setting spray. This make-up routine is not only one that I’d perfected, but one that I’ve relied on for years. With that said I’m actually can’t believe I’m here today to write about how I now prefer the latter. I know our tastes change and develop as we get older, and now I’m a HUGE fan of the make-up make under.
I think the biggest reason behind the change in my make-up routine is down to the confidence I have in my skin. I’ve never hated my skin, but I’ve never loved it either. I’ve always been prone to outbreaks, so that with a super pale complexion and freckles is a combination I’ve never liked. So, I’ve always tried to hide this with make-up. At the moment I can honestly say I’m so happy with my skin and the way it looks and feels. I feel like I have a new found confidence in my complexion, which – thinking about it – probably came from my style makeover with Helenlee. In addition to this, there’s also the #skinpositivity movement. This is something I’ve totally got on board with and as a result I’ve tried to embrace my bare skin even more by not wearing as much make-up and having more make-up free days.
It’s All About The Base
Up until the back end of last year there’s nothing I loved more than a full coverage foundation with a matte finish. Now I want my skin to look like skin, only a little better. This is why I opt for a light to medium coverage foundation with a dewy finish. Since I’m happy with my complexion I want that to shine through, so I apply a thin, even layer of foundation followed by a little concealer under my eyes. I use to really go in with setting powders and baking, but not so much now. I rarely bake, unless I’m heading out and I apply the smallest bit of powder to my forehead. Quite a simple base these days.
Bronzer > Contour
I never thought I’d see the day when I chose bronzing over contouring. I mean, I understand contouring and where the product goes on my face, but with bronzing I’m kind of lost with it. Do I just rub the product all over with a big fluffy brush? Whether that’s wrong, or right, it’s what I’ve being doing and I like it. I think I prefer it because I enjoy the warm glow as opposed to the cool, sculpting effect.
Just Wing It (Or Not)
It’s been a while since I dabbled in winged liner – just watch this space as I bet I get back into this one. Until then I’ve been applying just a sweep of shadow to each eye. Nothing crazy, or vibrant, just a subtle brown smoky eye to add depth to my eyes. I’ve also been applying just a touch of pencil liner to my waterline and tightline to frame my eyes, but give a soft effect.
Bye Bye Under Eye
I’ve recently got into a habit of not apply mascara to my bottom lashes. Apparently this is an upcoming trend in 2019 that’s suppose to make your eyes appear bigger. To be honest the only reason I stopped wearing it on my bottom lashes is because I was sick of getting those black dotty smudges underneath my eyes and no one telling me, so I’d walk around all day with them on. Are you going to try this trend?
Show Me The Nudes
Although I’m quite partial to a bold, orange lip you simply can’t go wrong with a nude. No matter the finish, a nude is usually everyone’s go-to colour and one my make-up draw is seriously lacking. At the moment I can’t get enough nude lippies, so please if you have any recommendations – let me know!
