I’ve always loved fashion – in fact my first job was in the fashion industry – however, I’ve always struggled with finding my style. I guess putting together outfits just doesn’t come naturally to me. I’ve always felt like there’s some sort of equation when it comes to perfecting your style and, unfortunately, it’s a calculation I just don’t understand.
Sourcing styles, choosing colours and putting together a capsule wardrobe; having a curated collection of clothes that complements my complexion, enhances my figure and makes me feel confident is something I do not have.
Fashion should be fun, but if I’m being honest my wardrobe upsets me and stresses me out. I don’t enjoy getting ready because I don’t feel, or look amazing in anything I wear. I just choose something comfortable to get me through the day. Quite frankly I’m sick of feeling like this, which is why I asked Helenlee, personal stylist and editor of www.helenleeloves.com, to help me with a style makeover and wardrobe detox.
I’ve known Helenlee for a while now, having met her at a blogger event some time ago. Following her online I know she’s super style savvy, but I had no idea that what started off as a passion for fashion turned into her becoming a fully qualified personal stylist who’s mission is to help women find their ‘true style’ that suits their taste, personality, colour and shape.
Before Helenlee met my wardrobe, we started with the basics; determining my season. Since I have auburn hair, a fair complexion and green eyes it turns out I’m a warm spring, which means my colour chart is filled with bright, warm and fresh colours. Helenlee didn’t just sit me down and tell me what season and colours I was, she explained why I fit into these categories and showed me many examples to ensure I understood. From this I knew my wardrobe was filled with the wrong colours and shades for me. The majority of my wardrobe is black and according to my colour chart black is too cool for me, so I should be wearing dark navy, as it’s warm and soft.
Next was my finding out my style personality. Helenlee, being an expert, already had an idea what my personality would be and after answering a selection of questions, my results came in and she was right; I’m a romantic. She list the traits of a person with a romantic style and she basically just summed me up to a tee.
Now came another test, this was the dress test. Helenlee uses this test to find out my body shape. First she took my measurements and then used a stripe shirt dress to assume my shape. Both confirmed that my shape is a ‘neat hourglass’. Although because of the way I’m dressing, I can sometimes look like an inverted triangle, which I need to be careful of because it’s making me appear top heavy, which I’m not.
It was then time for Helenlee to meet my wardrobe. First she highlighted clothes (this was only a few) that were in my colour chart and showed me exactly how the contrast between these and the darker colours I was wearing affect how my skin looks. Unlike the dark colours, my spring colours really brighten my complexion.
Going through my wardrobe, I picked out an everyday work outfit and an outfit I’d go to town in. My work outfit was high waisted trousers and a jumper, again both items were the wrong colours for me, so made me look dull. Helenlee showed me the simple mistakes I was making with my clothes and by making a few changes I could really enhance my figure. With this outfit I needed to highlight my petite ‘neat hourglass’ waist by tucking in my jumper. I also needed to roll up my sleeves to draw the eyes to my waist. This also tightened the fabric to ensure I didn’t look like an inverted triangle.
My second outfit was a black a-line dress, which has a tulle skirt, long sleeves and fabric across the front. This was my favourite dress in my wardrobe, and you want to know why it isn’t now? After Helenlee made a few changes, she showed me that the tulle fabric – because it wasn’t fitted to contour my body – actually made me look bigger and the long sleeves coupled with the additional fabric around the shoulders converted me into an inverted triangle. Once she pinned and tucked the additional fabric in and rolled up my sleeves, I literally lost a dress size; I looked instantly slimmer. She even went onto accessories too, and I found that gold, rose gold and tan are my new best friends!
Overall, Helenlee showed me that I’m wearing clothes that are far too big for me. Instead of opting for baggy and comfortable I need to be wearing items that fit me properly. I need to be wearing the correct neck lines and ensuring bottoms are high waisted to enhance my waist. I also need to watch my sleeves, as these can easily change my body shape, and more importantly, I’m also wearing the wrong bra size.
What I loved the most about Helenlee – a part from the fact she’s completely changed my life – is that she makes the experience very educational and fun. Not once did I find myself feeling embarrassed, or uncomfortable, or even thought that she was being patronising. I feel like she went above and beyond to help me and made sure I understood each and every step. I just thought she was absolutely brilliant and I wish I did this sooner.
Now that my wardrobe is sorted and my clothes have been detoxed I can’t wait to go shopping. The best thing is once you’ve had your makeover, Helenlee creates a personal group chat with you, so when I’m shopping if I ever need any advice on something, she’s there, or if I need any recommendations, she’s there too.
Do you struggle with your style? I would recommend Helenlee 110 million per cent.
