NARS is a cult beauty brand that I’ve been dying to try for YEARS. Now when it comes to trying out new make-up I’m all about heading to a store, or counter to swatch, touch, test, try and basically make sure that I’m getting everything in the right shades and tones for me. Lucky for me, NARS have opened a brand new counter in Fenwick, Newcastle, and I was invited along to be introduced to the brand and the products by its lead make-up artist, Lenny Galan.
Another reason I prefer heading to stores, or counters, is because I love chatting with like-minded ladies (and gents) about make-up, and it’s even better when they have great banter and are super helpful. This is how I would describe the ladies on the new NARS counter. Before I could even say why I was there, they made me feel so welcome; offering me chocolate and asking if I needed any help. Such babes.
There is an overwhelming amount of make-up on this counter and, me being a NARS virgin, I had no clue where to start. After speaking with Lenny, a lead global make-up artist for NARS, about what I normally wear, my skin type and how I like to look, he chose a selection of products and created the most amazing party-inspired look.
What I loved about this look is that he pushed my beauty boundaries. It would have been so easy for him to create a standard look that I usually wear, but no, he went that extra mile and created something that I’ve never tried before but would still suit me and complement my features. Not only did I learn so many tips and techniques when it comes to applying make-up, but I also got to try many cult NARS products in the process.
Firstly, I was colour matched using the Sheer Glow Foundation. Since I’m so fair it’s quite hard to find a foundation that’s not too white, yellow or pink, and it turns out that Monte Blanc was the perfect shade for me. Not only was I impressed with the colour, but the coverage was amazing too. Usually I would apply a foundation with a brush, but it turns out that using your hands is the best way to warm up Sheer Glow and create a flawless complexion. I also got to try the Creamy Concealer, and I was impressed that it lighten up the area and didn’t sit in the creases underneath my eyes.
Did you know that packing on the powder underneath your eyes stops fall out from ruining your base? I know it looks a little messy, but once you’re finished you simply swipe it away and you’re left with a smooth underage area and perfect smoky eye.
Now I did experience the NARS smoky eye during the John Lewis beauty event, but instead of black Lenny opted for purple. I think I’ve tried purple once before, but I never noticed how much this colour makes my eyes pop – have you seen how green they look? I would never think to use purple mascara either; it works just the same as black mascara but enhances the colour of my eyes and really makes my lashes stand out.
To finish off the look was lipstick. I told Lenny that I stayed away from pink shades because I feel like I don’t suit them. So, what did he do? He showed me that I’m totally wrong by applying a hot pink lipstick in the shade Claudia topped with ultra pink gloss. When I first saw it I was a little shocked, but by the time I left I was actually really feeling it. Seriously I LOVED this look and I was pretty gutted that it was a Thursday evening and that I was going home and not out on the town.
I still can’t believe this was my first proper experience with NARS. I know this isn’t the first NARS counter to open in Newcastle, but I didn’t know there was a counter in John Lewis until a few months ago, and I’ve always found Space NK to be a little intimidating. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to try out more of its products.
Have you been to the new counter in Fenwick? What’s your favourite NARS product? What would you recommend I try?
