Calling all Northerns, Colonel Porter invites you to his Emporium, which is nestled at the end of Dean Street in Newcastle. Who’s Colonel Porter? Well him and his sidekick, Archie Jones, are the geniuses behind the iconic Newcastle Brown Ale. See you learn something everyday, and today I’m talking about the venue that pays homage to this creative duo.
Whatever expectations you have of Colonel Porter’s I can guarantee they’ll be blown out of the water, as this Emporium is like nothing else in the city. Inspired by the 1920s, the decor is regal but comforting, stylish but cluttered with the most unique accessories. I’m talking about the vast selection of stuffed animals hung in and around the three bar areas. Expect a bear wearing glasses, an antelope curled up in the booths and 15 magpies, and I promise you’ll not find them all.
If the decor doesn’t give you the feeling of being transported back in time to the prohibition, then the secret bar, also known as Archie’s Bar, through the bookcase certainly will. Yes, you read that right. You have to locate the door on the bookcase to gain access to this private area, which doubles as a secluded party venue. Want to know another secret? The toilets come equipped with GHD straighteners. I repeat, GHD straighteners.
In addition to a tavern and rhum bar, there’s also an intimate Botanical Garden situated at the back of the Emporium, which is definitely a place to visit during the summer months. As soon as you enter the doors expect, vintage cocktails, tipsy teas, real ales, more rhum than you could ever want, and an adventure around every corner.
I’ve joined Colonel Porter’s ranks, will you?
