Despite the weather summer is officially here and with it comes an abundance of new food and drinks menus, and the latest one to launch is at the Malmaison Newcastle.
The Malmaison is an upscale hotel that’s situated on the Quayside and boasts unbelievable views of the River Tyne. From its grand staircase and arched windows to its sleek and stylish decor, the Malmaison is incredibly luxurious, and I was lucky enough to attend the launch to sample its new dishes and sweet treats.
With a non-alcoholic cocktail in one hand and a Malmaison selfie stick in the other, I headed straight for the food to see what grub was up for grabs this evening. For starters there were platters of prawns and towers of crispy calamari, followed by mini burgers and strips of steak, and to top everything off there was sticky toffee puddings, creme brulee, cheesecakes and much more.
My highlight was definitely the new afternoon tea menu, which was served on a giant tea stand. Offering a refreshingly, new twist on my favourite kind of tea, at the Malmaison you’ll receive a fruit scone, a hot smoked salmon & creme fraiche wrap, a chipotle chicken & avocado wrap, a mini burger, a strawberry & vanilla pavlova, a salted chocolate brownie, a lemon & polenta cake, a rhubarb & custard trifle and a mini strawberry milkshake.
I’ve paid more for afternoon tea at venues right on the Mal’s doorstep, so to find you received all this for £17.50 took me by surprise. I promise you I had every intention of making my way through the entire afternoon tea, however, y’know it was a fancy do so I reined myself in and picked up the strawberry & vanilla pavlova to try.
After sampling a handful of calamari, a few strips of steak, one (or two) sticky toffee puddings, the pavlova was extremely light, crunchy and filled with a gooey vanilla centre and topped with slices of fresh strawberries – it was the perfect way to finish off an evening of food.
Have you visited the Malmaison before? Have you tried the new food? What do you fancy from the afternoon tea selection?
