The grand opening of the Yves Saint Laurent: Style Is Eternal exhibition at The Bowes Museum was like stepping into another world.

Grand, luxurious rooms, lavished with historic paintings and in the middle sat a priceless silver swan, that I’ve heard, is absolutely stunning to watch when turned on.

Beautiful people mingling with one another, one lady in particular looked incredible dressed head-to-toe in an original YSL couture piece, with giant shades and huge, pouty red lips. And while we waited for the festivities to start we listened to the Royal Northern Sinfonia Wind Quintet with a glass of fizz in hand.

It wasn’t long before we were greeted by Sir Mark Wrightson, Chairman of The Bowes Museum, Mr Pierre Berge, President of the Foundation Pierre Berge – Yves Saint Laurent and Mr Adrian Jenkins, Director of The Bowes Museum, who announced the exhibition open.

The exhibition, which is in collaboration with the Foundation Pierre Berge – Yves Saint Laurent, is the first exhibition in the UK to display the French fashion designer’s work and life.

The exhibition presents more than 50 staple garments including; some iconic pieces from the Russian Collection, the Mondrian dresses and the Tuxedo, and aims to highlight the defining elements of his vision, and the significant influence it has had on fashion and the way we understand womenswear.

The display was absolutely amazing. My favourite selection was the suits and tuxedos, because I was told that YSL took what makes a man powerful and placed it on a woman’s shoulders – incredible stuff.

After wandering round the exhibition we were treated to a buffet created by Richard Allen, the executive head chef at Rockcliffe Hall, and it was definitely a top class spread!

Even if you’re not a budding fashionista, I’d recommend you check this exhibition out. It’s such a beautiful collection of clothes in the most stunning venue, plus Barnard Castle is such a pretty place in general, definitely worth a visit!

Have you checked out the YSL exhibition? What was your favourite item?
